Mos Def Retiring?!

Hello New World,
Yes, it is so true. On January 2, 2017, Yasiin Bey (a.k.a Mos Def) has officially retired from hip hop. I was shocked and saddened at the same time. One of hip hop’s vital minds, has now retired, and I’m in my feelings, here. My mind can’t comprehend this situation. I saw his last performance, in DC. He performed at the Kennedy Center and it was phenomenal. I can see how he has evolved, as an artist. Anyone that knows me, has heard this story, but I will tell you about it. When I was in high school, I shadowed with an entertainment lawyer, named Sherri Wyatt. I don’t even know if she remembers this, but I can’t forget this. Mos Def was performing at the University of Maryland, doing a campus show for the students. We, me and Sherri, was watching the performance from backstage, and he looks over at us, and I could not make this up. He goes into his hit “Ms. Fat Booty”. I was hype when he went into it. So, in my eyes, it was soooooo fitting that, at the end of his show, he performed a piano rendition of “Ms. Fat Booty”. I almost cried. I realized that he was the first artist I’ve seen with a career. He started, evolved, and retired, and I am proud to say that I saw it through. So, enough with the personal crap, how was the show?
Let me start off by saying I was surprised by the show. I did not realize how many DC cats was into Mighty Mos?! I know will sound stereotypical, but this was all I saw. I knew a handful of people that really listened to rap (hip hop). When I came up, people here was hard on go-go bands. The show starts with a screen displaying scenes from the movie “Wild Style”. I loved that movie. It made me love New York. Since going to the show, I, now, need to have “Wild Style” playing, while I listen to his music. Anyway, he starts off with new material, that no one has heard. Honestly, the new material can be kept to himself. It was garbage. Then, he goes into his established hits, like Mathematics, Oh No (with special guest Pharoahe Monch), Auditorium, and Respiration (with special guest Talib Kweli). This was the music that, literally, gave me the love of hip hop. He told a few jokes and preached to the crowd. I thought it was pretty cool. So, I have some good news and bad news. The good news is that I was able to record some of the show. The bad news is that I shot it on my iPhone. Not the best film quality, I know. Honestly, I did not think I was going to be recording. I was inspired out of left field. With that being stated, I put together a small something, something.
Enjoy!

One Thing Everyone Must Do

Good Morning New World,

dsc_0005I know it has been a while, and I do apologize. I am in the process of putting my life in a position where I can be back to being me. I realized that during the process of unemployment, you go through a process of redefining. It is very hard, to say the least. In the midst of unemployment, school bankruptcy, etc., we get clouded with moving forward and feel comfortable staying where we are. Wait a minute, you didn’t come here to read about my philosophy. Did you?! Probably not.

So, I will chat about something everyone needs to do. The African American Museum, in Washington DC, is finally built. The outside of the building, is a really eccentric design, but it’s what’s inside that really counts. “The National Museum of African American History and Culture is the only national museum devoted exclusively to the documentation of African American life, history, and culture. It was established by Act of Congress in 2003, following decades of efforts to promote and highlight the contributions of African Americans. To date, the museum has collected more than 36,000 artifacts. Nearly 100,000 individuals have become charter members of the museum. When the NMAAHC opens on September 24, 2016, it will be the 19th and newest museum of the Smithsonian Institution.” (nmaahc.si.edu, 2016) It has seven floor of history and, from my understanding, the floors goes from the darkest hours, on the bottom floors, to the lighter times. Unfortunately, due to my past injury, I could not view the entire museum. However, I will show you what I did see.

TTYL!
And Enjoy

SBY Teen Day Party Review

11390088_10153337069567421_3302863561904565379_n

Hey New World,

How’s everyone?

Happy 4th of July!

I am amazed at how well this Saturday posting is working for me. I am able to come up with a topic and freely write on it during the week. I totally love this.

So, you may ask, any events on the calendar?

Starting in August, I will be working with stylist Khalilah Neals, on building our ports. I know this will be extremely cool move for both of us. I believe the prior post will give a better description on what my feelings are on collabing. I just put in for my Press Pass for Latin Fashion Week, for both New York and Washington D.C. I am hoping this goes through. Next month, in July, I will be registering for the Komen Race for the Cure, in NYC. I believe this will be coinciding with Latin Fashion Week, NYC. I am not sure if I want to do DC Fashion Week, this year. I have done DC Fashion Week, before, and I heard that the creator of DC Fashion Week, Mr. Ean Williams, has a line out, called “Magnum”. I believe it is a men’s underwear line. Not totally sure, but none the less, should be interesting line. So, the debate still rages on about that.

The Sasha Bruce Teen Day Party.DSC_0027

So, okay, I want to start off with a little background into the organization. The Sasha Bruce Youthwork Prevention, Outreach, Wellness, Education and Risk Reduction (P.O.W.E.R.) Program launched an HIV testing social media campaign, over the weekend (#Never2Early). The founder of the organization, Debra Shore, started the organization in 1974 to help out runaway and homeless teens. Two years later, the organization gained the recognition of Evangeline Bruce, Ambassador David Bruce wife, following the tragic death of their daughter, Sasha. Mrs. Bruce donated the money to the organization in her daughter’s memory.

DSC_0018 The party was held at LIV Nightclub, on 11th and U Streets’ in NW. I have passed by this club, several times, and never realized it was a club. The spot actually reminds me of when I used to DSC_0080club, at the spots I used to frequent. There were several media outlets, in attendance, including the Washington Informer and WPGC radio. I believe the host, for the event, was Mr. Redz from WPGC. Now, I’m not even going to front. It’s been a while since I listened to the radio. The last host I remember vividly was Donnie Simpson and EZ Street.

DJ Fat Cat,DSC_0049 was vicious with mixing. Then, a dance crew came in and gave up some vicious moves. One guy, popped his shoulder out of wack, on beat. I thought it was very different, and cool, at the same time.

Now, if you follow me on my Facebook page, you will hear me demean today’s teens. Mainly because of the post I have seen online, or what I have seen, on the Metro in DC. I’m not even gonna front on half of the situations I have witnessed. I am not trying to make it sound freakin’ horrible, but there are some really DSC_0175ignorant situations I have seen, just for attention. This event was a perfect opportunity for teens to be viewed in a more responsible light. So, with that being said, I applaud the teens that showed up to show that they care about their lives. It was a beautiful event with a decent turn out.

Did I Tell You How Much I Love Old Navy?!

Hello New World,

So, the updates on the latest events.

11168382_10153323438122421_7749843228693420615_nJune 20th- Sasha Bruce Youthwork P.O.W.E.R. Program Launches HIV Testing Social Media Campaign for Teens — #Never2Early

(Teen Day Party)

Sasha Bruce Youthwork Prevention, Outreach, Wellness, Education and Risk Reduction (P.O.W.E.R.) Program launches an HIV testing social media campaign — #Never2Early — that is specifically targeted to sexually active youth between the ages of 13 and 24 who have never been tested for HIV before.”-Alee of DynamicPR

I will definitely be in attendance. This party will be vicious! Local station WKYS 93.9, will be there. There will be free food and drinks. Also, HIV testing will be available to all the teens. I love this event, mainly because it is showing teens how to take the initiative on their own health.

As far as shoots go, I have a few upcoming ones, that I am trying to narrow down.

On to the subject.Old-Navy-Logo

I think I need to start expanding my blog past photography. Although it is what I love, I need to talk about other things, that I love, as well. Starting with fashion. I’m not “big” on wearing the hottest brands, but I stick with what works for me. I am fan of Old Navy. I love everything they have. Although I am not the “flashiest”, I keep my wardrobe very “plain Jane”. Why, you may ask? Trends never last, and tend to repeat seasonal. Who wants to keep buying clothing on that purpose? Also, my hair, in my opinion, is the trendiest piece I have. Kimora Lee Simmons stated that “Never buy too many trendy pieces. Buy the basics and style it with one or two trendy pieces.” Yeah, I read her book, “Fabulousity”. Oh, I do apologize because that statement isn’t word for word, but that was her intent. I use it as my fashion rule book. So, the main store I tend to splurge is Old Navy. They have a unique blend of basic and trend. Almost every piece of clothing I have, has an Old Navy tag on it. My second favorite clothing store is, yup, the thrift store. But Old Navy, really tends to have awesome sales, extremely cute clothing, and friendly staff. I tend to shop the store in Friendship Heights, in DC. Everyone there, is a sweetheart. Also, to my plus size and in betweenie sistas! Old Navy sizing is off. I think the cut is for German woman. I find that their clothing, for me, fits bigger than what the size states. Don’t get me wrong, I love it because it makes me feel like I lost a lot of weight, but that is where you want to shop, ladies!

Well, I won’t keep running my mouth on the joys of Old Navy.

Updates………….Again?!

Hey New World,

Oh wow!

Once again, I am running again!

I want to give a quick “heads up” to any photographers, press, PR, and any media mediums out there. A friend of mine, in New York, is hosting an event. She is looking for media, to come out to her event. This is a major event and she is looking for media mediums to come out and show out! The event will be held at the Library Theater. I will link the show at the bottom of the post. If you’re interested in press passes, please click the link below, as well.

So, here are the updates.

Tonight, is Touché. The opening of Touché Supper Club is happening tonight. This will take place at 1123 H Street, in Northeast DC. The doors open at 4pm and the tour of the establishment starts at 5pm. There will be live local entertainment and menu samples.  So, come on and show out!

February 18-20, is the Cattura Vanity Magazine Fashion Week party. Now, with this one, it caught my eye because of the location. It will be held at the Museum of Sex in New York. I know, and the freak in me screams, “CAN’T WAIT!” Yes, smiling and blushing. I figured, since Valentines is the weekend, I would invite my boyfriend to the show. I mean, why not?! This place seems like a great spot for couples. I saw the site for the location, and it seemed like an “interesting” place to visit. The will be a fashion show and I upgraded to the VIP section. WOOT, WOOT!

February 20th, is two events that I need to choose from. I have the Glitter and Glowbal, at the Museum of Sex (yes that spot again!) and NYFW with Malph. This one is a rooftop event. The only part that may prevent me from doing that event, would be the fact that we are talking New York, in February, on a ROOFTOP! It’s going to be freezing! So that one, seems very swank, but still deciding if it’s doable.

Oh, and while I am in New York, I plan on visiting B&H photo. Yes, it’s the photographer’s toy store. The conveyer belts and every piece of equipment a photographer could think of? My idea of heaven.

Anyway, TTYL!

MshopNYC Review

2-BECOME-A-StylistHey New World,

So, I am back, for a while, though. I just came back from NYC, and boy are my arms tired!

LOL! NO!

Seriously, I just came back a week ago, and I’m tired and sick. I brought you guys back a cold from NYC!

So, I wanted to give a huge shout out to Michelle. She was very informative and inspirational to me. She has styled for numerous celebrities, opened her own boutique, taught various informational workshops, and she is originally from DC. She understood that in order to become someone great, you need to be in an area of greatness. Michelle gave honest answer for all the questions I had. I think that, unfortunately, I may have put her in a position that can be confusing, because I wanted just styling ideas. The stylist class is definitely for business and breaking into the industry, when starting from scratch. She offered so many options, for me, professionally, that I did not think about. I appreciated that, greatly. There are sooooo many changes to be made. So with that being said, next year will offer me new changes. Website, once again, will be revamped. I want to add to my portfolio stylist work. I think I can do this. I have always loved putting pieces together, and this offers me that opportunity. Also, when I officially make that “Big Move”, I want to be able to have job options. I think this will allow me to do this. While doing the workshop, Michelle made mention about Karl Lagerfeld. I knew of him as the lead stylist for Chanel, and that was it. She stated that he is considered as a “creative genius”. When I got home, I looked him up, and she was correct. He is lead stylist, creative director, and photographer. After reading more, I realized I have researched my new idol! I only know a small handful of people, who are considered as “Jack of All Trades”, and I want to strive to be this, within the fashion industry. Needless to say, the trip was very inspirational and very productive. So, if you don’t know how to get your “foot in the door” in the industry, I would greatly recommend taking one of Michelle’s workshops. Also, MShopNYC offers so many other workshops, in addition to the stylist workshop. Check them out!

The DC Latin Fashion Awards Show

Hey New World,

latin-fashion-week-galeria-expo-and-showroom-2012_239x200I am trying to get back on my schedule. It’s hard but I am getting there. I don’t want people to think I am just doing a “Soapbox Blog”. It ain’t like that?!

So first thing first, my updates. I have a huge project, that I am keeping under wraps, for the moment. This, for me, as well as quite a few others, will be “huge”. Once I get the “green light” to share, I will. Trust me!

On to the subject, DCLFA show.

_DSC3297 copyWhat else can I say, other than “pure magic”! I loved the designs. Honestly, right off the runway, I would love wearing all of it! Simply gorgeous! It was so much to shoot, that I still have images to clean. Anywho, here are a few shots!

Help Me Choose…………………..Please?!

Hey New World,
I know I am sooooooo late. This week has been hectic. I sent in one magazine submission, and I am working on submission 2. This is hard for me, because I am acting as my own stylist, as well as photographer. So, with that being said, I need some help. I went on Pinterest, for ideas, and I found too many ideas. So, I need to start narrowing down my ideas. Can you help me to choose looks?

DC Fashion Week 2013 Review

Hello New World,

20131002-102350.jpgI want to start off this post with a retract.

In a couple of post back, I stated that I had my press pass. I found out three days later that I did not have my pass. I had missed the deadline date to put in for the shows. I do apologize to you, the readers, and to myself. I kind of let myself down. I know that I need to be more on my game. I am woking on that.

“How did you get in?”, that is the question.

I was a second shooter for my friend at LLJ Photography. I know. Next year, I will be able to get my press pass. I already know that it is possible, I just need to be more vigilant on checking my email.

This time, I only hit up two events. This week, in addition to DCFW, I am in the process of planning for my upcoming shoot. I will be doing a shoot, on October 5th, in an attempt to be published. I am hoping this works out in my favor.

Anyway, the first event I hit was the Madame Tussaud’s show. I love the fact 20131002-102423.jpgthat the statues were left out, during the show. The show was for Corjor International. I loved Ean’s designs. I think that one of his influences for one of his designs was Madonna. I believe it was her “Like A Virgin” era. I loved it! Oh course, I love 80’s-90’s fashion. The final gown was very beautiful. It was like a fallen angel gown. At least that was the idea I had. I loved the concept. It was very chic, for me. The second show I attended was the finale. It was held at the Historic Society, in DC. 20131002-102405.jpgThis show held all the designs that were shown all week. It felt like this season had a lot of African themes. One part that surprised me, and maybe this was during the week, but I did not see Howard University. What happened?

Oh, and the networking this year was nice. In fact, quite a 20131002-102416.jpgfew people either I worked with them, friendly with, or I just admired their work. It was such an awesome vibe that I have to mention and link these people.
Morris Gough– excellent menswear designer, as well as an outstanding model, as well as a great friend!
Aleatha Carver and Prodigy Artist– two of the greatest MUA’s I have ever seen, as well as the two greatest personalities I have ever met!
LaLa from GSA (Golden Scissor Awards)– she is an exceptional person and does a great job marketing the event.
Cheri Amor Talent Agency– this young lady has some of DC’s hottest talent, and most were in the shows.
and Leah Jones (LLJ Photography)– always a pleasure to hang with!

I hope that is everyone! If I happened to forget anyone, I do apologize. It was just too many people.

Anyway, I am going to do a quick wrap up.
