Networking With Photogs…………….I’m In!

Hello New World,

This weekend was decent, for me. My birthday was January 16th, and I really didn’t get a chance to celebrate as I wanted to. That was fine. It helped me to plan for future ventures. One, in particular, inspired me to change my point of view. It made me look at things, on a larger scale.

So today’s topic,

But not just any type of networking. We are talking about networking with other photographers. Now, I know this sounds like something that shouldn’t be too big of a deal to do, but in some cases, it is. When I first began learning photography, it was hard to talk to other photographers about learning photography. I was often told learn your camera, which at the time, I only had it for a week or so. They never wanted to talk to me. It was a true blessing that a friend of mine, told me about The Exposure Group. This is one of the first black photography clubs. None the less, the elite of the elite photographers were welcomed. I got to visit one of the meetings by luck. So the majority of the group, didn’t really make people coming in feel “welcomed”. There were two photographers that were very cool. I have been cool with Ms. Leah Jones, ever since. This taught me, that, when I learned anything that was beneficial, I would, often, keep it to myself. In fact, I was taught, by my neighbor whom worked heavy in the field of photography, to keep it to myself. This made me a tad cold, and I didn’t want to do that. Eventually, I began to change that point of view. It was trial and error, but I eventually learned who to share info with, and who not to share info with. So, anyway, this weekend, I went to a photographer’s meet up, hosted by photographer Ethan Johnson, and his girlfriend. This was such an awesome experience. This had to been one of those times where I knew that something was going to come out of this. First, it was very cool of them to open up their home to other photographers. Then we went over our past experiences, and what we plan on gaining from these meet ups. I am always on lighting. To me, good lighting creates an image, but great lighting creates an emotion. That is what I want, so I am always looking for new techniques. I gotta keep up those magazine worthy images (hopefully?!). Also, I needed to know more about event shooting. I have a bad habit of shooting Auto, for lighting scenarios I don’t know. It was cool to learn what they knew and for them to learn about what I knew. I’m still learning, so whenever I come across some bit of info, I try to share it.

With that being said, we need to start sharing techniques, and networking with other photographers. I am only speaking, based on my prior experiences with other photographers. We are in an ever changing career, with new doors opened every five minutes. We need to learn from each other. I noticed that, with the photographers, we tend to “clam up” on sharing, but open up when we cut each other down. WE NEED TO STOP AND SHARE, MORE!

The DC Latin Fashion Awards Show

Hey New World,

latin-fashion-week-galeria-expo-and-showroom-2012_239x200I am trying to get back on my schedule. It’s hard but I am getting there. I don’t want people to think I am just doing a “Soapbox Blog”. It ain’t like that?!

So first thing first, my updates. I have a huge project, that I am keeping under wraps, for the moment. This, for me, as well as quite a few others, will be “huge”. Once I get the “green light” to share, I will. Trust me!

On to the subject, DCLFA show.

_DSC3297 copyWhat else can I say, other than “pure magic”! I loved the designs. Honestly, right off the runway, I would love wearing all of it! Simply gorgeous! It was so much to shoot, that I still have images to clean. Anywho, here are a few shots!

Pinterest for Photo Ideas

Hey New World,

IMG_0499.JPGSo, first off, my timing is all screwed up! I just been that busy. So here are some quick updates.

On October 4th, 1-5pm, I will be doing another set! I soooooo can’t wait! I have my lighting ratios together, make up artist ready, and wardrobe almost complete. Although, earlier this week, I had issues with studio space. I learned a very valuable lesson. Jealousy is a horrible monster, paid or not! Now that this situation is now in my past, on to the future.

On October 17th, brings Latin Fashion Awards Gala, in DC. Now, I did LNYFW, and I thought it was absolutely awesome. So, now that Sobeidy Vidal will be bringing the awards show to the District, it’s needless to say, I’m excited! This will be a huge award event, with what I believe will be very Avant Garde.

On to the topic!

So, every now and then, I do internet searches for lighting set ups. Google search gives an amazing amount of creative ideas for lighting set ups. You get some really creative ideas! Anyway, one of the times I did an internet search, brought me to Pinterest. I thought to myself, “Really?!”, but I was actually shocked. Pinterest has an abundance of set ups. It has pics with settings. I thought to myself, “This should be very interesting.” I plan on trying it, on Saturday. I know when you see the images, you may think, this looks pretty ordinary, but it will be exciting for me based on the set up I use. I don’t know. I will get a little nerdy about that. Anyway, if you need ideas for lighting set ups, check out Pinterest for ideas.

It’s the Premiere! Bottom Of Bottom’s Launch Party

Hello New World,

I am back from the Big Apple!

What a time! I could scream it from the roof tops about how I love being in NYC. It is always the best!

Dame Fashion/Vagabond Sophisticent magazine, both, are the creation of Editor In Chief Whitney Bell. It will display fashion from around this country,  from variety of the latest upcoming photographers. Side advertisement, I’m in that hot few! The premiere issue will be available on iTunes on August 17, 2014, and the print will be available for purchase, through Dame’s site, on August 24, 2014. So definitely check it out for the content and ME! HELLO?!

So how was the launch?

Awesome! I will say that I was behind, though. It took me a minute longer to get ready. None the less, though, it was awesome. We got a table, next to the stage. I don’t know about anyone else, but I had fun! Ate a nice meal and partied beside Dru Hill. Anyone that really knows me, knows that I am a huge Sisqo fan! I loved everything he had on, especially his Nike’s! I loved it!

One more side note-Thank you soooooo much to Whitney Bell and her crew for putting the whole party together. Once, again, one of the most awesome moments in my life, having Sisqo singing in my mere direction! Whew! Thank you, ma’am!

Anyway, here is the video! The rest of the videos are located on my FB page.

Guess What Happened To Me?!

_DSC2055Hello New World,

Last week I had another hectic week. I had class, once again. So I have images from this week’s class that I have not even touched, along with my shoot images, that I have been very focused on. So with that being said, I won’t keep you readers, all day with my crap. I will just announce the news.

So, you know my goal, as a photographer, has been to be published. Well, I need to change this goal. For years, I have submitted my work to different publications, feeling low because I felt like
I was ever good enough to be published. In a sense, this was good for me because this feeling made me work harder at accomplishing my goal. So, with the last shoot that I had wrapped up, in prayer, I sent it to the editor of Dame Fashion Magazine. Low and behold, I AM FINALLY BEING PUBLISHED! This has been a dream of mine, for a long time now, and this is proof, to me, that if you stay focused on your dreams, then it will soon become a reality. So since this has happened, the new goal is getting revamped. The next goal is for me to be published in Glamour magazine. Whatever disappoints that should come my way, may I take them only as learning lessons.

Hello New World, I swear, I wasn’t holding the images for ransom. I will be honest, with everyone. I don’t think that this was some of my better shots. I think that I should have been more focused on the … Continue reading

My Opinion on Photoshop Makeovers

Hello New World,

So, I was reading an article that I thought was kind of crazy, to me. I am the first to say this, even though there will be probably several shocked faces (sarcasm), but here it is.

There it is! I laid it all out! I like some of her songs, but I am not trying to memorize her dance moves. Truth be told, I am actually more of a super fan of her husband, Jay Z. I pretty much own everything Jay has done! His greatest album, Reasonable Doubt, of course! I wish I could have went to the show that was held in Baltimore, last week. I was late with it, coupled with many bills.

Anyway, I am going way off the subject.

I know this is late, but there is an article out about Bey wanting unflattering photos of herself off the internet. I guess that this came about during the Superbowl Halftime Show, I am not sure when. I know it was not recent! However, I am assuming that photographers must have got her mid dance move. It happens. The article states that her publicist has requested several different images be removed from the internet, but we all know that once it is out there, it is out there.

This prompted me to further research the issue of photo retouching. Although there are several online tutorials on this, I have not found any on the opinions of people who have had this done. Very interesting!

So, I felt that I would throw my two cents out there. It is just my opinion.

On the Beyonce issue, honestly, I saw a few of the photos that were considered as “unflattering”, which shows just how effective this whole process of removing those images were in the first place. However, I thought the images were ok. As I stated before, I am not a Bey super fan, but I will state that if you sell out shows, and afterwards, have legions of new fans, then obviously something has been done correctly. Those “unflattering” images show me, and should be to anyone else, that this young woman is a very powerful performer, period. Tina Turner, and other performers, have some images that do not flatter them, and when you see them, you get the point that the performance was vicious. Trust, it would be a totally different story if you just looked “unflattering”, walking down the street, eating food, posing for a pic, etc. But, she is not! It is during a musical set that involves physical activity. No one looks good during any physical activity. So, please, continue to show us your human side, Mrs. Carter. It is so greatly appreciated! Also, I love the new cut! “A woman that cuts her hair, is a woman that is about to change her life” (Balsan, Coco Before Channel)

On to the next part of the topic.

I started out in Photoshop, doing makeup makeovers. It took me some time, to get it to look natural. I am very proud of the fact that I spent days and years on learning this technique. I am far from a pro, but I am damn good at what I do, as well as countless other professional retouchers. This is what we do! I think that, as long as it does not skew reality, it should be fine! My definition of “skew” is turning a woman of 260 lbs. into a supermodel of 115 lbs., or giving a person unrecognizable “photoshop plastic surgery”. A Photoshop makeover is like eating cheesecake, it must be done in moderation. So as long as it is in a respectable aspect, fine. When you begin to mess with the reality of what a person looks like, and by a very reasonable amount, then you have altered that person’s appearance, and then image becomes unusable.

Ok, so that was my soapbox rant. Let me know your thoughts, in a comment, below.

Photoshoot Diaries, Entry 1

Hello New World,

So, I decided to put out there, how I go about planning for my shoot. I will be giving you several entries, up until the time of my shoot. The proposed date will be June 23rd. I decided to do a shoot the way that I have always done it. Plan in excess. So, let me start the entry with the first step.

I know that there are times when we just have to do something quick, because the opportunity came out of the blue. Then, that is understandable. However, if you had the idea that has been swirling in your head for a month, and you decide to act on it, in a day’s notice, then prepare for a possibly stressful shoot. I try to plan at least two weeks, in advance. I will state that the past couple of shoots have not gone the way I would have like them to have gone. This was due to ill proper planning. So, this time, I am starting back from scratch. The first thing that I need to do is post a casting call. In the performing arts, casting (or casting call) is a pre-production process for selecting a cast (a meaning of the word recorded since 1631) of actors, dancers, singers, models and other talent for a live or recorded performance. (Wikipedia, 2013) I have two accounts with two different modeling websites, however, the one I use the most is Model Mayhem. The models and MUA’s(make up artist), that I have met, have been very fun and colorful. Some of them, I still keep in touch with. I put out two casting calls, one for models and the other for MUA’s. So far, I have had a few responses, but I am waiting for more! I will be browsing the site, and contacting a few individuals, to see if they would be interested in working with me. By doing this, I am hoping to spark more interest. More interest means more models to choose from. This leads me back to a statement that I said earlier. Plan in excess. This statement is means that you want to plan for the worst. If I want to work with one model, try to book two, or three. I have had, like clock work, one show up on the day of the shoot. If all three show up, combine it and make it a great shoot, but if none show up, enjoy your day off.

There are different ways to plan, for a shoot, and I am just giving you the way that I do it. This is not the end all be, by no means. I am quite sure that there are better ways to plan for a shoot. This is just my way of planning. You can use this to, as a template, to plan for your own shoot, or not. 🙂
