The Next Phase

Good Afternoon New World,

_DSC4266So I apologize for being distant (again). My life, these past few weeks have taken so many loops and turns, I really don’t know what to do. It has made me feel kinda withdrawn from society.

Well, I start off by saying that, and it may not be true for most photographers, but the one’s I know in the nations capitol, often hold a “regular job”, aside from their art, to pay the bills. I am no different. I have found that DC, really doesn’t have a market for me. With that being said, I have unfortunately parted ways with my current contract. I have worked there for a few years, and have grown to like and admire the people on my job. I wished it was longer, but as the saying goes, one door closes and another opens. I just have to practice patience, which is a huge skill for me. This, I strongly believe, was a learning lesson.

The next change was that I took my photography up a level. I was able to connect with one of the most vicious stylist, Andre Wallace II, also known as VooDoo Boi. His unique style is very impressive. I can’t wait to show it off. The team that I was able to work with, was amazing, in the alley. Khalilah is unbelievable with her makeup skills and Atochi is magnificent with hair! Oh, and I can’t forget the star of the shoot, Roshelle. She is absolutely amazing. That is all I’m going to say!

So, with the time that I have, I want to do some reflecting, and planning, for my future. I want to plan for an upcoming shoot. I want to try to blog more. I need to contact, and keep in constant contact, with my business connects. So, with that being stated, I won’t make any specific promises, on me blogging more, and being seen more, socially. Once again, these past few weeks, are making me reevaluate and restructure myself. This is a work in progress, and I have nothing but time to progress.

Collabing………Would You?!

Hey New World,

dsc_1382_5809438057_o

Let me start out by stating that this isn’t one of those rants where I spout off about how I am the greatest, or some bull crap like that. That’s not me, at all!

dsc_1409_5810001334_o

So, recently, I’ve been asked, by a few fashion industry professionals, to collaborate with them. In the past, I would turn it down, because something, at least in my opinion, would never feel correct. It either felt forced or the potential person I would be collabing with, would rub me the wrong way. I know a lot of people that are reading this, and are probably saying to themselves that money is money. This statement is true, however, regardless to the amount; I will not risk my sanity on no amount of money.

dsc_1396_5810068008_o

So, in the past and up until the present, I have been so thankful to work with some wonderful individuals. We all came together, on a collaboration and created magic. That is what I want with all my images. Magic! So, recently, I am fortunate to, once again, work with more awesome talents. One, who is Ms. Khalilah Neals, online blogger for Facon Magazine. I am super excited about the collab in the works. I do, in the meantime, have a few shoots lined up, but nothing like this! I have so many ideas to bring to the table, it’s not even funny.dsc_1346_5810002908_o

For a long time, I have been “the everything”, in the shoot process. I have been pre and post production. It would be nice to finally be able to share ideas with a person who has the same goal in mind. Ya’ know?!

So, collabing. What do you think?

dsc_1393_5810002310_oI love it. It is a way for you to trade off services, network, and gain more knowledge.

What is your take on the subject?

Leave me a comment and I will answer back!

When Do You Stop TF Work?

Hey New World,

This post, I think could be for anyone in any profession that they love.

I was on Facebook, yesterday, and I noticed a post that came up on my wall. I don’t remember it, word for word, but I can give you the sum of it. It was a fellow photographer. I am not sure if it was something he wrote or if it was something he saw on someone else’s social media page. Basically, the statement referred to how much he paid for his equipment and how much he expects to receive for his services. One statement hit me. It went like “If you want quality, then you must pay for it”. I thought to myself, “Wow! That would be an excellent topic for the Blog!”

So here is the million dollar question.

When do you stop doing TF work, really?

The reason I ask is because I am confused by the answer.

Actually, I see both sides to this statement.

I mean, I agree with the statement and I also disagree with the statement. Now, mind you, this is my viewpoint. Everyone has different views on this topic. I assume some readers (especially someone who relies solely on their business) will probably take my viewpoint as ignorant blabber. Hey, as I stated before, this is MY VIEWPOINT!

Agree

So, I think I did a post on this subject, before. However, here it is again.

I agree with this statement, on this note. If you want the absolute best, then you must be ready to shell out the money. The cheaper you go, the worse you’ll get, trust me. I have seen so many situations where someone asks me to clean up another photogs mess. That is something I don’t do. I never touch anyone else’s work because it is considered as a form of copyright infringement. You wouldn’t try an order Filet Mingon from McDonald’s, would you?! Come to think of it, the only thing at Mickey D’s that contains the word “Filet” is the Filet O’ Fish!  A truly accomplished photographer can manipulate the light, so strategically, that she/he may not have to do any work in Photoshop. So keep that in mind when the photographer quote’s you a price!

Disagree

Now here is why I disagree with this statement.

None of us are experts. That goes for the “professionals”, as well. I look at TF as practice, you know?! There might a lighting technique I’ve been dying to try. What if I have a client that doesn’t go along with an idea I have in mind? I can always build my portfolio; why not take on TF work?! Since taking these lighting courses at the Washington School of Photography, I want to try techniques I’ve seen in the magazines. I am so excited when I attempt to decode what lights were used, how the lights are placed, what settings went into creating the image, and so forth. That is the excitement, for me. Also, and call this stupidity, but I remember how it was when I began to shoot. The models I needed in my port, just was not available, of did not want to shoot with me, due to lack of experience. Since then, my priority has been to do TF work.

So, I see both sides of the coin.

I guess that is my point of view, on the subject. Let me know what you think.

Sasha Bruce Wants You…..To Come Out and Party!

Hello New World,

I know, I normally blog on photography, but I also want to show the world I am not jus11390088_10153337069567421_3302863561904565379_nt a one-sided coin. So I want to begin to blog about things that are personal, as well as interesting to me, and to you, as well.

One thing that is very near to me is teen health. Anyone that knows me knows that I am quick to say, “Whatever those kids are talking about, I don’t want to hear it!” Mainly, because of the stream of profanities that comes along with somewhat of a statement.

Well, if you don’t know, DC has a high HIV/AIDS rate. Although it has gone down, in recent years, it is still the highest among the African American community. So what is one way to educate our community? One way is by teaching the young. Well, how do you teach a generation that doesn’t seem to be interested in listening? My favorite way is “PARTY UP!”

WOOT, WOOT!

Yeah, old head partying. LOL!

Jasmine Williams HIV Tester/Counselor Image Courtesy of Sasha Bruce YouthWork Organization.

The Sasha Bruce Youthwork Prevention, Outreach, Wellness, Education and Risk Reduction (P.O.W.E.R.) Program launches an HIV testing social media campaign (#Never2Early), and it is hosting a teen day party, on June 20th. I was able to catch up with one HIV Tester/Counselor, Jasmine Williams, to chat with her on the program and party.

Me: Tell me about “YouthWork”?

Jasmine: The founder’s name is Debra Shore. Debra started the organization in 1974 to help out runaway and homeless teens. Two years later, the organization gained the recognition of Evangeline Bruce, Ambassador David Bruce wife, following the tragic death of their daughter, Sasha. Mrs. Bruce donated the money to the organization in her daughter’s memory.

Me: What is the P.O.W.E.R. Program?

Jasmine: P.O.W.E.R., which stands for prevention, outreach, wellness, education, and risk reduction, is one of the 16 programs. This program is to educate young people on issues surrounding their sexual health. The primary focus is on HIV-AIDS and teen pregnancy prevention. We (the organization), also, offer other services that include testing, teen counseling, and workshops.

Me: Why did the P.O.W.E.R. program create the #Never2Early Social Media Campaign?

Jasmine: During our HIV testing and counseling sessions, we (the counselors) are finding out that a lot of the young people are engaging in sexual activity, as well as engaged in unsafe risky behaviors but they’ve never been tested. This is very dangerous because, given the nature of STDs and HIV, a lot of times, no symptoms initially and he/she will continue  to have sex with different partners spreading the disease unknowingly to their partners because they’ve never been  tested. So this campaign is to target teens that have never tested before, given their current life activities. We want the teens to incorporate this as a part of their overall healthcare.

Me: What age group does the campaign focus on?

Jasmine: The campaign focuses on ages 13 to 24, as well as the organization. So, we have encountered young people that have told us that they been sexual active as early as 11 years old, so honestly, if it was up to me, I would have the age for consent for sexual services start at 11 or 12, but 13 is the age for our services.

*Side Note-Jasmine just sent me a link on DC minor’s consent. It state, “A minor of any age may consent to health services which he or she requests for the

prevention, diagnosis, or treatment of the following medical situations:

(a) Pregnancy or its lawful termination;

(b) Substance abuse, including drug and alcohol abuse; and

(c) A mental or emotional condition and sexually transmitted disease.”

Minor Consent Link.*

Me: To mark the launch, of the campaign, the program has an event, on June 20th. Can you tell me more about it?

Jasmine: The program will be hosting a day party for teens between the ages of 14 and 18. This day party is simply an opportunity for young people to  be in a safe environment, so they can enjoy themselves with the company of their peers and food, but to also have important information at their fingertips. It’s not in a setting that  the school mandated. The event is going to be very casual music dancing, and we’ll be able to bring some of the services that we offer, to the teen community like HIV testing.

So, on June 20, 2015, come out to Liv Night Club, located at 2001 11th St. NW, Washington, DC, and check it! It’s from 2 p.m.–6 p.m. It’s going to be free food, music, and testing. I will be there shooting.

!!!!Welcome Back!!!!

FullSizeRender1 Hey New World,

How goes it?

I know, since March, and I know I should receive quite a few backlash or loss of readers. I would expect that and to the faithful set of readers, I do greatly apologize. My personal life has overcome my professional life. None the less, God, or the Higher Creator, your choice, is good and has chosen to bless me with all opportunities, good or bad.

So, I will give you the current lineup, once I play catch up.

So, I finally shot my tribal shoot. I thought they were absolutely my best work, to date. Playing with shadows was more work than what I expected. However, the work was well worth it! The images were beautiful. I was able to use my Nikon D5500 and it was absolutely THE NEW BABY! I love my Nikon D7000, and it will always be my first. However, this Nikon is VICIOUS to the tenth power. I can’t wait until they come out with the book to redo my settings on the camera. Then you will really see what I can do. Insert evil laugh and palm rolling!

Okay, now moving into the lineup.

June 14th-Red Carpet Screening for Dana’s Lane

“The world of television is filled with programming that, quite frankly, lacks substance. This is seen most frequently by talk shows using tabloid antics to engage their audiences. “Dana’s Lane,” a 30-minute talk show hosted by celebrity commentator, host, producer and entrepreneur, Dana Hicks—aka Dana Dane—is the exception. “Dana’s Lane” is an informative yet fun program that will intrigue viewers.”-Alee of Dynamic

This leads me to my next part. Prior to the Red Carpet event, I will be interviewing Ms. Dana Dane, for the blog. This will be an exciting feat, for me.  To be able to start off interviewing, with a celebrity host, is pretty decent.  Also, she has an exciting line up going.

“• VH1 Love and Hip Hop Reality TV star and Grammy Award-winning producer Chink Santana
• Ex-NBA basketball star and entrepreneur Steve Francis
• Hollywood actor and stuntman Tim R. McAdams who was Christopher “Ludacris” Bridges’ stunt double in the hit film “Furious 7”-Alee of Dynamic PR

July 11th-Fashion on the HudsonFullSizeRender

“25 Designers, 150 Models and loads of entertainment presented by Fashion Avenue News Magazine.  This year we will feature:  Couture, Ready to Wear, Plus Size, Resort Wear & Teen Designers.  Fashion Icon Awards, SuperModel Awards, and much, much more.  This is a Family Friendly show, bring everyone.”(EventBrite, 2014)

There are a few other events, coming up, but I need to double check. Either way, I have so much coming down the line, I really don’t know how I am going to do all of this.

Disappointment and Determination. How Do You Deal?

DSC_0001Hey New World,

How has the world been, today?

Well, in my world, I’ve been having a few deep thoughts to go past. Over the weekend, I decided to practice with the Nikon D5500. I had to shoot in JPEG, because Nikon and Adobe haven’t “linked up”, yet. Well, at least until Sunday. Adobe came out with an update to now view NEF files for my camera. Needless to say, I was jumping for joy! Alas, it was just a pipe dream! I tried to pull up those NEF files and I’m still having trouble with that! Come on! I have faith that it will happen!

DSC_0002So, during the week, I had gotten sick. I caught a cold, but still in recovery. Later on, in the week, I will be doing a product line shoot for a jewelry designer. This young lady creates spectacular jewelry, and I can’t wait to have the opportunity to show you some of her work. Then, in April, my tribal shoot will finally take place. Yeah, I know the snow wasn’t bad, but I take the Metro. Also, I am still in the process of resolving my own personal issues, so I may not be as busy as I am used to.

Disappointment and Determination

_DSC4266

What lead you to this subject, Tre’?

Well, I was talking with a good friend of mine, Ty Hanson for It Works, and he said something to me, that really rang with me. He valued my creative freedom with his future business plans. That statement, in my opinion, is something I believe a photographer hear’s when they have officially “made it”. Well, that brings me back to the party I hit in NY. It was the rooftop party. It was there, I spoke with a gentleman, whom gave me the run down on the industry. He basically told me that, without looking at my work or what I had to offer, if I’m not immediately recognizable, then maybe I should delve into a different aspect of photography. DSC_0007I won’t lie. For a brief second, my heart fell into my shoes, because he didn’t really know who I was, how far I had came, or etc. Not saying that he should’ve been like “ I love all of your work”, but still?! He just knew that I was that short lady, with a camera, in the back of the room. I totally felt like a novice, at best! I was like “Wow, I’m THAT lady?!” He let me know to “reinvent” myself. So, I went from disappointment to determination. I recognized that I don’t want to be that lady, ever again. Although, I’m no where I would want to be, I’m so much further than where I could have imagined! I am so blessed for that!

So, disappointment. How do you deal with it and does this feeling makes you determined to surpass that feeling?

Let me know your thoughts.

Glitter Glowbal and Uomo Magazine. My Weekend in NYC.

Hey New World,

_DSC4244I know. It has been a hard week at work. Last week, the company that I work for, TASC, had begun the transition over to Engility. Yes, I do have a “regular” job. So, needless to say, that I have been swamped. Also, planning for the upcoming shoot, next weekend, has me super busy and stoked! So, today is the “catch up” day.

So, okay! We (me and Mr. Aviles) went up to NY on Thursday, the wrapping of to New York Fashion Week. I wish I would have went up earlier, during All Star Weekend! I think it would have been fun! So, when I went to this particular event, I did it up! Anyone tha_DSC4221t knows me knows that when I normally do events, I come dressed down, because, I’m me! For NYFW, I figured I better come with it! From a prior event I shot at, Latin FW, in NYC, I saw a lot of exceptional hair and make up artists. I was able to get in touch with one young lady, named Deina Nelson. She is nothing but the truth. She does vicious work! So, any NYC photographers, in need of an MUA, you need to get at her! I got “dolled up” for the weekend events. We did the Glitter and Glowbal and it was amazing. The Museum of Sex was a little small, but pretty cool. I would love to see the place during normal business hours. We had VIP seats, and front row was awesome! We caught the last show.

_DSC4245The designer’s inspiration was late Alexander McQueen. The masks the model’s had were awesome. The rhinestones mask and glasses, made me want to buy them, on spot! The party for Uomo Magazine, for me, was a little dry. The Gavensport Hotel was absolutely amazing. I met a few individuals. One artist I met was named Natiq. He’s an amazing artist that has showed his work in various places, around the world. I also met Conrad Bradford. He is a designer who made an extraordinary hat. Conrad did something that most people in the industry don’t and wouldn’t do, told me some real good information that made me think. He is a wonderful man for that!

_DSC4226

Now, of course, while in NYC, you gotta go to the holy grail of photography spots! Yes, I hit B&H Photo    . I never realized how close it was t_DSC4242o my hotel. I went there, with the intention of getting a Nikon D5300. I was soooooooooo set on getting this camera, as my back up. I came in, and the sales rep said, to me “Yeah, you could go with that, or you could check out the D5500.” So, I thought, wouldn’t hurt. I fell in love with it! The exact same features as the D5300, minus the GPS feature. Now, when I purchased the camera, I thought this camera is 2 years out, maybe! I didn’t know this camera was released in January 2015! So, I’m not sure if it’s Adobe or Nikon, but the RAW files need to be compatible with Adobe. Amazing images, and I can’t show them, as of yet, because the file situation. I wanted to use the camera for the upcoming shoot, but if I do, I would use it in JPEG. Urgh!

Anyway, love the time, loved the shows, and I can’t wait to go back up!

Touche’ Anyone?! Touche’ Supper Club Review

Hey New World,

How is it going?

Happy REAL Snow Day!

I know you guys are like “Say what?!” Well, D.C. hasn’t really had any snow. This was the first time, in a long time, we had some “workable” snow. No good for snowball fighting, be decent for sledding. Yeah, real big kid, right HERE!

Well, everything is very vicious, for me. Wow, I have too much going on and doesn’t seem to stop. That is the coolest thing I have ever had happen to me. Thursday, I know it’s a long time coming, but crucially needed. I’m coming back to NYC! Cattura Magazine is throwing a two day event, at the Museum of Sex! I’m going! Still haven’t decided if I am still going to the rooftop party for Uomo Magazine. It’s cold and snowy, up there!

March 8th, I am back at it, again. I have another shoot coming. I will be doing portraits that will feature the work of the unbelievable makeup artist I work with. This shoot will be for Facon magazine photo submission. I can’t wait!

_DSC4186Well, here is what you have been waiting for, Touche’!

I know I normally talk about photography and fashion, but I figured I would take a quick break from that. We all need a break from work to remind us that we are human. We need a place to just kick back and relax. So, here you have it. I am giving an honest review to Touche’. Simply put, I love the club. This club is two levels. The first floor reminds me of the spots that the grown folks would go play cards, hang with friends, etc. To me, that felt like a second home! Don’t judge, colorful childhood! The second level was all the way live, with stage and lounge area. The general manager, Jayne’ LaMondue Price, was the sweetest person in the world. She made sure that the customers were well taken care of. The club is located on 1123 H Street, NE DC. It’s down the street from Union Station. It’s on the newly renovated H Street corridor.

The menu features a Southern French fusion cuisine. The sample of the night’s_DSC4216 copy menu was very welcoming. The baked macaroni and cheese was as close as my mother’s recipe, as possible. Thank God, she doesn’t read my blog. I would hear it later. The wings, and apologize if I don’t know exactly what they were, was spicy and succulent. I loved the catfish bites, with spicy sauce. It was so vicious.

_DSC4218 copy

The bar was highly live! I didn’t really drink like I normally would, because, me personally, I hate drinking by myself. None the less, the bartenders were sweet enough not to let me go full in, alone!

The biggest difference, I think, with this club, is that they feature live entertainment. But, the thing is, it’s not just normal entertainment. The club

House band, Gut Sol.

House band, Gut Sol.

features local talent. So, all my rapper, singers, bands, etc., if you are interested in being a part of local talent, I will link the website to the club. Go to the “Contact Us” link, and hit the manager, Jayne’, a note! She will feature Up & Up open Mic! (rappers, please!) Back to the review, the house band, Gut Sol, was very vicious. The songs were very nice.

The best part to the event, was who I met next! So, I grew up in the 90’s. I was a big rap (not hip hop) fan! I’m talking back in the days when rappers told stories based on point of view, note a continuous hook! Needless to say, I was big on video shows, like “Yo, MTV Raps” and “Rap City”. I was a Joe Clair fan. He was funny as hell, on the show. He used to host “Rap City” with Big Lez. All the real rap fans know who she is! So, WPGC came out to show support. I had forgotten that Joe Clair came back to D.C. His whole morning crew, Tati, Guy, and Poet, showed out, to show support. Joe was so cool. I wanted to ask him, what happened to Big Lez, but got flustered.

Poet, from the "Joe Clair Morning Show, on 95.5 WPGC, in DC.

Poet, from the “Joe Clair Morning Show, on 95.5 WPGC, in DC.

Poet, was the sweetest person I had met, so I need to give her a big shout out! HEY LADY!

I wish I could’ve stayed a little longer, but I had to go to work the next day, and Empire was coming on soon. Yeah, I’m on that band wagon! In fact, if I may suggest, I noticed some places are jumping on the Empire bandwagon. It would be cool if the club had an “Empire Watch” party. I’m thinking around about the time the season finale episode or the season 2 premier. Just an idea!

But either way, the club is very relaxed, with down home food, live local entertainment, in an upcoming neighborhood. Sounds like a win win, to me!

But, don’t take my word on it. You should really take time out to go!

Updates………….Again?!

Hey New World,

Oh wow!

Once again, I am running again!

Courtesy of All Star Latin

Courtesy of All Star Latin

I want to give a quick “heads up” to any photographers, press, PR, and any media mediums out there. A friend of mine, in New York, is hosting an event. She is looking for media, to come out to her event. This is a major event and she is looking for media mediums to come out and show out! The event will be held at the Library Theater. I will link the show at the bottom of the post. If you’re interested in press passes, please click the link below, as well.

So, here are the updates.

Tonight, is Touché. The opening of Touché Supper Club is happening tonight. This will take place at 1123 H Street, in Northeast DC. The doors open at 4pm and the tour of the establishment starts at 5pm. There will be live local entertainment and menu samples.  So, come on and show out!

February 18-20, is the Cattura Vanity Magazine Fashion Week party. Now, with this one, it caught my eye because of the location. It will be held at the Museum of Sex in New York. I know, and the freak in me screams, “CAN’T WAIT!” Yes, smiling and blushing. I figured, since Valentines is the weekend, I would invite my boyfriend to the show. I mean, why not?! This place seems like a great spot for couples. I saw the site for the location, and it seemed like an “interesting” place to visit. The will be a fashion show and I upgraded to the VIP section. WOOT, WOOT!

February 20th, is two events that I need to choose from. I have the Glitter and Glowbal, at the Museum of Sex (yes that spot again!) and NYFW with Malph. This one is a rooftop event. The only part that may prevent me from doing that event, would be the fact that we are talking New York, in February, on a ROOFTOP! It’s going to be freezing! So that one, seems very swank, but still deciding if it’s doable.

Oh, and while I am in New York, I plan on visiting B&H photo. Yes, it’s the photographer’s toy store. The conveyer belts and every piece of equipment a photographer could think of? My idea of heaven.

Anyway, TTYL!
