One Thing Everyone Must Do

Good Morning New World,

dsc_0005I know it has been a while, and I do apologize. I am in the process of putting my life in a position where I can be back to being me. I realized that during the process of unemployment, you go through a process of redefining. It is very hard, to say the least. In the midst of unemployment, school bankruptcy, etc., we get clouded with moving forward and feel comfortable staying where we are. Wait a minute, you didn’t come here to read about my philosophy. Did you?! Probably not.

So, I will chat about something everyone needs to do. The African American Museum, in Washington DC, is finally built. The outside of the building, is a really eccentric design, but it’s what’s inside that really counts. “The National Museum of African American History and Culture is the only national museum devoted exclusively to the documentation of African American life, history, and culture. It was established by Act of Congress in 2003, following decades of efforts to promote and highlight the contributions of African Americans. To date, the museum has collected more than 36,000 artifacts. Nearly 100,000 individuals have become charter members of the museum. When the NMAAHC opens on September 24, 2016, it will be the 19th and newest museum of the Smithsonian Institution.” (nmaahc.si.edu, 2016) It has seven floor of history and, from my understanding, the floors goes from the darkest hours, on the bottom floors, to the lighter times. Unfortunately, due to my past injury, I could not view the entire museum. However, I will show you what I did see.

Good Morning New World,
I do apologize. Yesterday I shot an event for the non profit I volunteer with, called Archaeology In The Community. The event was called “Archaeofest”. It was an event where archaeology is introduced to the community. It was fun. But the main reason for the post, was where the event was hosted. I know, I’m selfish for this one, but I just couldn’t help myself. The event was hosted at the Dumbarton House. This house, located in Georgetown, was the house of the first registrar of Treasury, Joseph Nourse. The house is absolutely gorgeous and would make for an excellent site for a shoot. Unfortunately, I can’t show the images that I have, however, I will show a few images from online, that I did find. Let me know what you think.
*Side Note- The house seems to be used for mostly wedding venues, in case anyone is looking.*

My Retouch Tutorial

Good Morning New World,

First off, I want to say

🎉🎉Happy July 4th🎊🎊

😂

I know those emojis have nothing to do with July 4th, but that is what Apple has!

I was talking with a friend of mine, and she began asking me about cameras and photo retouches. So, when you start me on photography, prepared to get your ear chewed off! I can talk about that all day long. Little did she know, she had given me the idea for my next blog post. I don’t normally do this, but I think that this may be good to know for both models and photographers, even though I am lightly touching on the subject. So, I just wrapped up my Photoshop 2 class, and anyone that knows me, is probably asking why the PS2 class. Well, I never received certification as a photographer, and I am in the process of doing that. During the class, we lightly touched on photo retouching. I wanted to give a basic tutorial of where my eyes go, during the process of photo retouching. I will be using a recent shot of one of my school’s administrators. It was for a commercial.

skin

1. Skin- The first thing I look at, is the subject’s skin. I try to clear up any skin imperfections that may have shown up on camera. Here is a little side note. For models, if either a photographer or make up artist gives you a list of things to do, prior to the shoot, please do it. Trust me, it shows!
eyes

2. Eyes- With a subject’s eye’s, I try to bring those out more so than anything else. The reason is because a person’s eyes are what speaks to you, before anything else. Usually I would use the dodge tool to brighten a person’s eyes. For photographers, this is also a handy little cheat. When a subject’s eyes are properly lit, you can see what type of lighting the photographer used to light his subject. Hmmmmm……..that will be my next post.🤔

3. Skin (again)-This time, we go into smoothing of the skin. It gives the appearance of soft, smooth skin in your subject. With this step, there are a thousand and one ways to achieve this. The real question, once you have smoothed the skin, is “Does it look natural?” If the answer is no, then you need to rethink your smoothing technique. Oh, and I know there are quiet a few photographers that do this, but it needs to be said. If you use a PS plug in, third party app, or etc, please learn how to properly use it. I hate seeing a beautiful image ruined because the photographer did not fully understand the software or allow the software to fully run without making any adjustments.

color adjustment4. Color adjustments-Okay, so I am guilty of this one. At times I am so enthused about working on an image that I bypass minor color adjustments. This is actually a pet peeve of mine. In the image of the circled arm, her arm was actually lighter that her body. My quick fix? If you have PS6 or PSCC, use an adjustment layer. For this image, I used the Photo Filter, on warming tone. Don’t quote me on the name. I turn it up, in the adjustment layer, fill the mask with black, paint the arm white, lower the opacity down to 0, and gradually bring it back in. Now, that fix is a 50% shot, but when all else fails, it’s my go to.

hair

5. Hair- I am a big stickler for beautiful hair, which is only next to eyes. So what I do is use the dodge tool to add sheen to the highlighted tresses. Also, I use the clone stamp tool to fill in any gaps in the subject’s hair (and of course, we are talking about women).

6. Lint or Dusts-Last step would be to look for any imperfections on the clothes.

lint

Although, that is not the full extent of what I do, this gives y’all an idea.

 Show Me Your Personality

Good Morning New World,
So I am excited about being back in school. I know there are so many people out there, saying “Wait, how old are you again?” This year, God willing, I want to earn my certificate in Photography. It will be a big step for me. My current teacher, Courtney Jackson, teaches Photoshop II. There are some thing that I have learned on my own and through tutorials, but it never hurts to learn different techniques.

Anyway, she taught us about a “Personality Grid”. I never heard of them, in prior, so this seemed to be something that could be really helpful for me. Anyway, I wanted to show the one I did with my daughter. She is tons of personality. Please, enjoy! Also, if you have any grids to share, feel free.

So What’s Next?

Hey New World,

I apologize for the late post. Personal life is taking me places.

So, I noticed something. I went back to old posts, and I spoke a reality into my life. How exciting it is to see that a post that you had written at the beginning of the year and had no idea would come into reality, is the new norm! So with that being said, I am going to make another reality happen. This year, I want to be published in a big name publication! I don’t know how this is going to happen, but I’m going to put my all into making this goal happen. Mark it!

This year, I have two more classes I need to get out of the way. I’m doing the Photography Business I and II classes. I need this to build into a business for my daughter. One day, she is going to take it over. She is a great photographer, now. I need her to strive to be the exceptional one. Also, I need to create a brand! Not trying to sound bad in any way, but I realized that I am a unique individual. I realized that people recognize me from my hair, and then realize I have a personality. Go figure! I want have people recognize that personality. If people can identify you, then they feel a connection to you, I think. I want that! This creates better business.

This year, I need to be more in NYC. I spent a good bit of time up there, but I still need to network way more than what I have. I am so grateful for the people I have met, in my life. They have been so awesome. Truly, they have, in a sense, been my lifeline and inspiration, and I feel so blessed to know these individuals. You know who you are.

With that being said, I put my affirmations out there.

Tell me yours!

MshopNYC Review

2-BECOME-A-StylistHey New World,

So, I am back, for a while, though. I just came back from NYC, and boy are my arms tired!

LOL! NO!

Seriously, I just came back a week ago, and I’m tired and sick. I brought you guys back a cold from NYC!

So, I wanted to give a huge shout out to Michelle. She was very informative and inspirational to me. She has styled for numerous celebrities, opened her own boutique, taught various informational workshops, and she is originally from DC. She understood that in order to become someone great, you need to be in an area of greatness. Michelle gave honest answer for all the questions I had. I think that, unfortunately, I may have put her in a position that can be confusing, because I wanted just styling ideas. The stylist class is definitely for business and breaking into the industry, when starting from scratch. She offered so many options, for me, professionally, that I did not think about. I appreciated that, greatly. There are sooooo many changes to be made. So with that being said, next year will offer me new changes. Website, once again, will be revamped. I want to add to my portfolio stylist work. I think I can do this. I have always loved putting pieces together, and this offers me that opportunity. Also, when I officially make that “Big Move”, I want to be able to have job options. I think this will allow me to do this. While doing the workshop, Michelle made mention about Karl Lagerfeld. I knew of him as the lead stylist for Chanel, and that was it. She stated that he is considered as a “creative genius”. When I got home, I looked him up, and she was correct. He is lead stylist, creative director, and photographer. After reading more, I realized I have researched my new idol! I only know a small handful of people, who are considered as “Jack of All Trades”, and I want to strive to be this, within the fashion industry. Needless to say, the trip was very inspirational and very productive. So, if you don’t know how to get your “foot in the door” in the industry, I would greatly recommend taking one of Michelle’s workshops. Also, MShopNYC offers so many other workshops, in addition to the stylist workshop. Check them out!

Drumming Up Support!

Hey New World,

I know my times have been sooo off. My schedule has been picking up, recently. FullSizeRenderMy apologies. I have been horrible with my social networking skills.

So, first, I wanted to tell you about upcoming events. I have to cancel a few events I had planned for New York, due to some scheduling conflicts. I will be, for sure, in New York for November 23, for a class for MshopNYC. They have a “How to Become a Fashion Stylist” class, which to me, is very interesting.

On December 7th, the Bobbi Boss America’s Next Top Stylist competition will be held at the Washington Convention Center. This is definitely an event to see, trust me! I loved every bit of it! Here is the press release from my friend Alee, of DynamicPR:America_s_next_top_stylist_2

Who will be the 2014 BOBBI BOSS® America’s Next Top Stylist? Find out on Dec. 7 at the Washington Convention Center, in Washington, D.C., during the 23rd Annual Golden Scissors Awards – HairGames 2014.

The finalists for the 2014 BOBBI BOSS® America’s Next Top Stylist are some of the most talented and creative hairstylists in the country. They are: Shivonne J — Houston, Texas; Cocca Mane — New York City, NY; Richard Grant of Brenton Lee Salon and Studio — Pasadena, Calif.; and Tarina Akbari — Atlanta, Ga. Who will current BOBBI BOSS® America’s Next Top Stylist winner Travis Douglas of Columbia, SC, pass the title to? You have to be there to find out!”

So, as you know, I recently did a shoot, and the images were awesome. Mainly because I did not use my own camera. People, please learn from my mistakes! I left my camera battery in the house. How horrible was that. My friend, Leah Jones of LLJ Photography, had her Canon. I will say that I am a “Nikon Girl”, and will be fo’ life! I used her Canon and I am shocked at the images. I’m not switching teams! I am not sure if I gave my opinion on this previously, but Canon’s are great for portrait, and Nikon’s are excellent for scenery. Anyway, I am drumming up support for one of my latest ventures. WTTG Fox 5has a segment called “Allison Seymour’s Fab 5 Pics”. The first week she did this venture, a local photographer was selected. I thought to myself, “Damn, his business is through the roof, now!” So I thought to myself, “Hey, why not try?!” IMG_0010and I did. I uploaded 2 images to Instagram, with the hashtag “Fab5pics”. So, if you are feeling froggy, stop by and leave me some love.

Learning Fashion

Hey New World,

Yesterday, I started to plan for upcoming events, and came across quite a few events that caught my eye. Needless to say, my calendar is filling up, quick.

One event, which is free, is from FAN magazine (Fashion Avenue News). That was the first magazine I wanted to become a part of, but I guess God had other plans. Anyway, they are hosting a Sip and Shop event. The event will have 2 fashion show, as well as a casting call. I will be attending that event.

Also, I ran across a workshop that seems very interesting. The company is called “MShopNYC“, and they offer classes in fashion styling. At first I thought, ” That sounds interesting, but not for me”. Then, it hit me, “That’s not business minded of you”! I need to listen to that voice, more often. That voice has guided me to great places and adventures that have yet to fail me. So I did a little bit of research, and this company has worked with Mary J. Blige (one of my R&B idols), and not to mention, she has a really funky cut!

Well, there is this company, out there, that is looking out for upcoming fashion entrepreneurs. If you are just starting out in the industry, or just a little confused, like myself, then you will definitely want to check out one, or all, of their workshops. The stylist class really sparked my interest, because when I do shoots, I normally do the styling, and get a little swayed, after a few days. This usually happens when I’m doing the shopping, because I start to think, within the shopping trip, this looks good, as oppose to shopping by theme. It usually falls together, but it takes time for me because my focus goes in ten different directions. I felt like this really could help me, in my endeavors in becoming an accomplished fashion photographer. The workshop will be on October 19th, but I will try to attend another one on a later date. Check out the site!

PhotoShop World is Here! Why Am I Here?!

Hey New World,

This weekend was beautiful. Being in New York, is always a pleasure.

So the subject. Yes, PhotoShop World is happening! Yes, right now. In fact the key note speech is set to start at 9 am. Sooooo…………….yes, I am a die hard fan of Photoshop World and NAPP. Why am I in DC if PhotoShop World is in Atlanta? Well, it’s for that reason. It’s in Atlanta! Nothing against the ATL, but I am just not seeing it. In fact, I have family there. Still not seeing it. Now, I will say, that I do have the PSW app, on my iPad, and it updates me to what is going on. Personally, I love Florida. I wish this year was in Florida. I love Orlando, the theme parks, people, and the outlets. Oh, I miss my Nike outlet!

Anyway, check out the website or download the app, to check out the line up. I think that since Adobe has launched its CC, that will probably what a majority of the workshop will be based on.

Anyway……..TTYL!
