Monthly Archives: April 2012

Hello New World,

Did you hear? America’s Next Top Model went through a round of firings. At first, I thought that the judges had bigger opportunities, to pursue. I thought that they asked to perhaps leave their contracts. I guess that was not the case. According to US Weekly Online, Tyra Banks shocked America’s Next Top Model fans when she fired her panel of experts — Nigel Barker, Jay Manuel and J. Alexander — but the show’s hostess says cleaning house was a necessary evil. (US Weekly, 2012)

Wow! My mouth was floored.

Let me start off by saying that I am not an advocate fan. I don’t own any of the seasons, on DVD. I catch the show, every now and then. So, needless to say, these are my opinions, on the show. I like Nigel’s work, and I think that they need a photographers opinion, on how the models could perfect their posing. I feel as though his opinion would be more so needed because he has been on both sides of the fence, as far as modeling and photography is concerned. They really need Miss J. to show these young ladies how to walk like models, instead of walking on knuckles. Also, Jay Manuel’s vision, for the shoots, are so awesome, that I secretly copy them! If the ratings are plummeting, then it is because each season is the same. I was an advocate fan after the third season. I think that the models that are chosen, look extremely similar to Tyra’s model pals. If not that, the girls seem to look similar each year. It just feels like each season regurgitates itself. One idea, that I sent to her FaceBook page was to do a season on plus size models. I have nothing against pin thin women, but another reason that the ratings, I think, are going down, is because thick chicks, such as myself, can’t fully relate to the models. I will say that it is a given that she has had a few plus sized models on her show, but none ever make it to final four. I could be wrong, because as I stated before, I don’t watch every season, but that would be a great start. Honestly, if they had to fire anyone, it should have been the producers. The ideas for new shows are recycled each season.

So, my best wishes goes out to Nigel, Miss J., and Jay Manuel. For Miss Banks, I hope this coming season was worth this change.

A New Idea

Hello New World,

I have been doing some thinking, and I have come to a conclusion. Anyone one that truly knows me, knows that I am a seasonal photographer. I know there are quiet a few people, out the asking themselves, “What the heck, is a seasonal photographer?” Well, I will explain. The is a person who only shots during good seasons. The best season, to shoot, would be during spring and fall. I hate to sweat, and I hate the cold! If I am unhappy, then that means no shooting.

Anyway, during these times, I would like to have a goal of doing a photoshoot, at least once a month. Here is the dilemma. I have too many faces, that I would like to work with, but I am confused on who to work with. So next month, I will begin a polling contest. I will give out a list of models, and you can vote on the model you would like me shoot. After the second week, I will announce the winner.

Give me some feedback. It would be greatly appreciated.

My Equipment List

Hey New World,

I never got a chance to discuss something important, to myself, as well as my readers. LOL! My one reader. Hey Aliya Michelle! She is a great actress!

Anyway, every photographer has this post, so I must have one, too. My equipment list. Yes, every good photographer has one! First, before I go any further, with my list, I will state that this list is to only state what I use. I am not, in any way, endorsed by any product brand. Also, this list is not meant to be a “Be All, Have All” list. It is just what I use, personally. So without further ado, let us begin.

Camera Body- Nikon D7000
I traded up from a D5000 to a D7000. I love the pictures this camera produce, very clean. The advantage, dual SD card slots. This helps when you want to do non stop shooting. The only setback is the camera can be kind of heavy, on the neck. Other than that, love my baby.

Lens-Nikon AF Nikkor 1.8 50mm, AF-S Micro Nikkor 3.5 85mm with VR, AF-S Nikkor 3.5 18-105mm with VR, AF-S Nikkor 3.5 18-55mm with VR, and Tamron SP 4.0 70-30mm with VC
First, let me say, yeah I have the “Nikon Theme” going, but photography is expensive, and at a cheaper price, the Tamron works just as well. The 50mm, I will say, works excellent, when I do use it. If you can’t tell, I don’t use it that often. It is a great portrait lens. The 85mm, it’s ok. I use it every so often, as well. I tend to use the zoom lens, more often than the fixed. I am not big on constant lens changing, unless needed. The 18-105mm, is my go to lens. I use this lens for all my shoots. The 70-300mm, I use it for the images that are too far away. Also, my nerves are shot, so my hand is shaky. I try to purchase lenses with Vibration Reduction or Control. I know there are a lot of photographers that will tell you to take VR off, because it eats at the camera battery, but I need it. I like my images to be as clean as possible. The only time, that I take VR off, is when I am shooting on a tripod. There is no use having it on, when your tripod is working as a steady base.
Flash- Nikon SB-600
Lol! When set properly, this flash works pretty well. Yeah, I need to know my equipment. If I get some time, this year, I will.
Flash Accessories- Ray Flash, Rosco Strobist Gels, and Fotodix Softbox
I love my Ray Flash. The Ray Flash is a ring adapter that is placed on the flash. In my opinion, I think it gives a great pop to people’s eyes. The Fotodix Softbox is my portable Softbox. I love to see soft light wrap around a person. The gels are simple to change color.

Yup, strange enough, an iPad. An iPad is great for tethered shooting. There is a way to do it wirelessly, but I grab my camera adapter kit, USB cable, and go. Also, it helps when a client wants to review photos, and they just can’t see the screen on the back of your camera.

Wow! That was a lot. I will go over my studio equipment, next week.

Reviews and Updates

Hello to All,

Well, I apologize for being behind. I need to tell you how the shoot went, with Amber Smith and Tamona Christian. Well, the shots came out great. I am still in the process of uploading the shots. I think that both Tamona and Amber have great talents. Amber could work a pose. Tamona has a funky, eccentric, urban style that, I feel is guaranteed to get her far. These two young ladies are forces to be reckon with.

On to my NYC trip! It was exhausting. I have been sleep for the past two days. The city wore me out! However, the deals on Canal Street, oh my! If I had more money and hands, I would be styled out, for sure! Down to the business. MAC Pro Studio was nice. Very nice. The only problem was the membership. I am a student, but not a photography student. Also, I am still in the process of building my portfolio. Needless to say, that I am still working on getting published in a publication. It will happen, and my patience will be a virtue. Getting back to the point, it is not to say that you need a membership, to use the studio, because you don’t. I am always looking for a discount, because I am a broke student. So, I know I would not use a studio all day, so that did not seem like a good deal. I, then, went to this studio called 1896. It is a warehouse studio, with plenty of room, and different feels to each room. Needless to say, I feel in love with it. I will be returning, in the summer, to do my shoot.

Well, just had to post my updates.

Off to New York, I Go……….

Hello to All,

Well, at the current moment, that I am typing this, it is 7:08am. I am on my way to New York.

This will be my first time in New York. Hopefully, this will be one of many trips. Yeah, I am the only person that has not been. So, I asked my friend, Leah Jones, if she wanted to come with me.

Well, today, is the day, that I am checking out the MAC PRO Studio, in New York. Why New York, you may ask? Well, NY is the fashion capital, and where else would I think about doing a shoot. This shoot will be a glamour shoot. I know, for this shoot, I will be getting the best of the best. I am still not sure if I want to video this. It will be a thought that hits my mind, for a later date.

Anyway, excitement awaits. I will be giving a review on my trip soon.

Practicing on the Waterfront

This gallery contains 9 photos.

Hello All, I thought I would post some of my practice shots, from yesterday. My daughter and I went to the DC Waterfront, and got in a few practice frames.

New Excitement

Hello to All

Well, for anyone that has followed me on FaceBook, my personal page, knows that I have an upcoming trip. I will be coming to NYC, to visit the MAC cosmetics store and studio.

Surprisingly, but yes, MAC has a photo studio, in NYC, that is available for photographers to use. How did I find out about this, you may ask? Well, my daughter’s school secretary, told me about it.

MAC does a lot of great ads, and I would be ultra excited to shoot in their studio. Unfortunately, as much as I love the ads, I can’t use their products. My skin is over emotional and hyper sensitive. Most skin care products that I use, usually make my skin worse.

Needless to say, I will be keeping everyone posted on my trip. In fact, I may be doing some shooting, who knows?
